A lot of people believe that vitamin C and zinc can stop and cure colds and flu, and will even reduce their length and severity, should you get an infection. Yet another group of people believe that this isn’t true. For all its worth, I am with the first group. I used to sufer numerous bouts of colds throughout the year, till I started taking vitamin C and zinc supplements. Now, I hardly ever get a cold. Even when my wife and son get colds I don’t tend to participate, anymore!
There are numerous studies, either supporting or refuting claims of the efectiveness of vitamin C and zinc to stop or cure colds and flu. As far as I’m concerned, nothing can convince me that vitamin C and zinc don’t work against flu and colds. It works for me, and I therefore wouldn’t hesitate recommending it to anyone intersted. I mean, there is good evidence that vitamin C and zinc boost the immune system, which in my book means that it affords your body the chance and ability to fight infections, including colds and flu, and win.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which helps protect cells and keeps them healthy. It is essential for the maintanance of healthy connective tissue, which gives tissues and organs support and structure. Because your body can’t store vitamin C, you need it daily in your diet. An adult needs roughly 40mg of vitamin C daily, although amounts of up to 1000mg daily can be taken, and are unlikely to cause any harm. It is highly unlikey that you’d be able to get 1000mg of vitamin C from your diet, but supplements with such amounts are available and can be incorporated into your diet.
Oranges, tomatoes and peppers are some of the good sources of vitamin C, whereas meat, shellfish, milk and nuts provide zinc. Healthy eating, based on a balanced diet which includes fruits and vegetables, will provide all the essential nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. This will not only boost your immunity but also affords your body other health benefits which include achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, which in the long run protects you against diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
Healthy eating should be a part of people’s lives. This will improve people’s health and wellbeing, as well asa their overall quality of life. It will also save a lot of money, the government spends on treating preventable conditions like obesity.
